The 2020 Tax free weekend in Tennessee begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 31 and ends Sunday, August 2 at 11:59 p.m. During the tax free weekend, numerous items can be purchased without having to pay sales tax. The items include clothing under $100 per item, school supplies under $100 per item, and computers under $1,500. The tax exemption not only applies to items purchased within stores, but also items purchased over the phone, internet, or mail in which the retailer accepts the order during the tax free holiday.
That weekend is a fantastic time to go shopping in Pigeon Forge due to the tax free weekend in Tennessee! Keep in mind, though, that there are lots of people who take advantage of shopping during that weekend and the malls and stores are abnormally crowded. The best thing to do is get a list of items you want to purchase and have a game-plan. Get to the malls early, get what you need, and get out. Don’t plan on “browsing” much or really being able to even “try on” clothing simply because of the crowds. Know ahead of time what you want and what sizes you need. Be as prepared as possible.
The Tennessee state sales tax is 7%, so you’ll save at least 7% on qualified purchases during the Tennessee tax free weekend. On top of the Tennessee state sales tax, many counties have a local sales tax added as well and Pigeon Forge is located in Sevier County which has a local sales tax of 2.75% so you would save that also during the tax free weekend meaning a total savings of 9.75%. So it’s basically nearly a 10% off coupon for all qualified purchases made during the tax free holiday in Tennessee!
