Dolly Parton No Longer Grand Marshal of Pigeon Forge Parade
The city of Pigeon Forge has announced that Dolly Parton has decided to step down as the Grand Marshal of the Annual Dolly Parton’s Homecoming Parade after 32 years. The annual parade began in 1987, just one year after Dollywood opened. The parade served as the “kickoff” for the tourism season in the Smokies. Over the years, the parade has grown to include incredible floats & performers that attract tens of thousands of spectators each year. In addition to stepping down, Dolly’s name is being removed from the parade name as well …details below.
Dolly Parton had the following to say about stepping down as Grand Marshal:
“For 32 years, it’s been my honor and privilege to serve as the grand marshal,” Dolly said. “In that time, Pigeon Forge has grown so much and so many new businesses and attractions have come to town, everyone agrees that this is the perfect time for me to step aside and share the spotlight with some other folks. Dollywood has hogged the spotlight long enough!”
The good news is that the parade will continue, but with a new name. It is being renamed the “Music in the Mountains Spring Parade” and the new Grand Marshal for 2018 will be Cal Ripken, Jr.
The city of Pigeon Forge put out the following statement describing the renaming of the parade:
“The Music in the Mountains Spring Parade will showcase the rich musical heritage of the Great Smoky Mountains while spotlighting the variety of entertainment provided by the many theaters located in the popular vacation destination. Theaters located throughout the city also will have the opportunity to give parade attendees a glimpse of their respective shows. Other familiar favorites will be featured as well. In recent years, Pigeon Forge has received an increased number of inquiries from high school bands seeking an opportunity to perform. The Music in the Mountains Spring Parade will provide an annual occasion for bands of all sizes from across the country to compete.”
Will Dolly even be IN the Parade?
This is getting asked a lot…and when the city was asked, their response was “Dolly always has a standing invitation to participate!”
So as of right now, it doesn’t look like she plans to be in the parade at all, but she can if she chooses. If we get word that she will be in the parade at all, we will post it on facebook, so be sure to like our facebook page!
Will Dolly be at Dollywood?
Dolly has announced that she does plan to be at Dollywood the weekend of the parade to do her appearance at Dollywood! Typically, she parades through the park around 4pm. As we get confirmation and more details we will update this post.
The new Music in the Mountains Spring Parade will be on May 4, 2018 at 6 p.m. on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge.

What are your thoughts?
Have you attended the annual Pigeon Forge Parade? What are your memories of seeing Dolly on her floats each year? Through great weather as well as rough weather, she has happily served as the Grand Marshal…what are your thoughts of her stepping down and having the parade renamed? Let us know in the comments below!
I like Cal Ripken Jr… don’t get me wrong. But what in the world does he have to do with music?? You needed to have chose someone who is some type of musical artist, not a retired baseball player! Just don’t make a whole lot of sense. There is no connection there with music whatsoever. Think you should have thought this through a little better before making your decision! Sorry but I am disappointed.
I thought the same thing
Well said and good point!
Sorry to see so many changes concerning Dolly! First the changing of the name of Dixie Stampede to Stampede and now Dolly not being Grand Marshall. Seems like someone is pushing her out…not nice!
I have to agree. Dolly put Pigeon Forge on the map! She has done so much for the community and surrounding area and now it appears they are pushing her out. Has she gotten too old or what?
I agree and all they are doing is causing people to choose other places to go for vacation. All these changes just to please a few but when they see how many are effected maybe they will see the disappointment so many have.
This will be my first year visiting and I was so excited know that Dolly Parton was a part of this community and that she has done so much for pigeon forge I couldn’t wait to see it now very disappointed and hope they change their mind and realize they made a mistake because I will come this time but will probably be my last since all of the changes are going on .
My thoughts as well. She built the town and I hope they don’t forget that.
Dolly has helped so many people, I hate seeing all these changes that apparently are leaving her out of some very big things that are happening in Pigeon Forge. It like it’s her choice to not be Grand Marshall, I hope that is true. I’m afraid you might be losing some visitors.
I heard back in December that Dolly sold her part of Dollywood and the other facilities she owned. Is this correct? Seems like to me that something big has changed. I will miss Dolly being around the area from time to time but I understand. Thank you Dolly for all you have done for everyone that has crossed your path!
First they take the confederate flags off Dixie Stampede, then they take Dixie off Dixie Stampede. Now no Dolly Parade. There has never been anything offensive about anything that Dolly has been involved in. She put this area on the map and now it looks like she is being excluded from everything. I shall never be interested in the parade again. I will not encourage anyone to come to the parade as I have done in the past.
Dolly caved in to the special interest groups in removing Dixie from her restaurant’s and removing the North and South show regarding to the Civil War. It’s time for her to retire, take her billions and become history herself. The city she is from should also take and remove her statue along with all the other southern Statues being removed.
Are you kidding.! She has done so much for Pigeon Forge and area. Where are you from?
How rediculous for you to say that! Dolly hasn’t done anything wrong except give back. She has done this since she was 19 years old.
I agree she has truly disappointed me! I would really like to know her thoughts on why she gave them what they wanted! I have loved her because of what she stood for and supported Dollywood for a long time. I’m not interested in visiting anymore. I’m done. She caved!
No way. Dolly IS Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. She is a native that has cherished her homeland and done remarkable things for the people, community, and spirit of her Smokey Mountains. If she wants to retire, that is her privilege, but Dolly will forever be remembered!
Might need to do some homework… I don’t think Dolly actually owns the Dixie Stampeed or Dollywood 100%. It’s a corporation and if my understanding is correct ( and I may be wrong) she holds only a few shares and her name is used to promote both places. Don’t blame Dolly.
So, you’re saying all the good she has done for the people of the area doesn’t mean anything because one of her businesses made a decision you disagree with? Gee, I am glad I don’t know you personally because I wouldn’t want to be completely cast off simply because I did something that you didn’t like.
Your so wrong ray Ross, If it wasn’t for Dolly her home town wouldn’t be what it is today, she has helped so many people
I agree I don’t really think this is her choice
Sir:
You sound like a depressed Hillary supporter.
Move to California where liberals like you belong.
Get a life will you?
Dolly Parton made the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg what they are today, thriving tourist destinations.
Ray, agreed just looked her net worth up on Google and it is 500 million. Dolly could give 2 flapjacks worth of care about people’s feelings. Defending her after she tarnished the good name of Dixie in the name of PC? She has all the control she wants. People need to realize the entertainment industry is at a loss for any leaders including Dolly. Another soul lead down the road of political correctness.
Amen
I agree! With all of it, it’s happening too soon after the name “Dixie” being removed and Cal Ripken, Jr.? Really? There’s plenty of famous musicians from this area and Tennessee in general.
Politically correct is the name of the game in todays world. Dolly probably got forced out!! Sad!!
I agree. Think there is more to this.
I agree. Looks like someone is pushing her out of the town that wouldn’t be booming if not for her vision all those years ago!
Honestly…. this is the saddest news I have gotten today. Dolly is the Main Attraction!! She’s amazing!! She is why I come to the parade every year! I’m truly her biggest fan and I always attend that parade just to see Dolly and just maybe lucky enough to meet her in person that day . It’s just not going to be the same ! She makes pigeon forge!
I agree!!
Dolly has ALWAYS and should continue to be a huge part of this. I remember the first time I saw her in the parade. Very disappointed and I hope they change their minds. A retired baseball player, that is just ridiculous!!!
I agree it does seem one hundred percent as if Dolly is being pushed out. If Dolly was going to retire or even just to take time off I do believe that Dolly would announce this to her fans and people love her. It seems as if everyone is in the dark about all this and why? I do believe the people need more answers then just changing all this and upsetting people it’s sad I just bought a home here my husband retired and here is where I wanna live the rest of our lives I never got to meet nor see Dolly in person but I was hoping to I love her music and her movies she played in was awesome. Every year we would vacation twice a year so we could plan to see more of what the great smoky mountains have to offer.it must be time for Dolly to do for Dolly an her husband I wish Dolly the best with love

Totally disappointed. Not understanding at all. And this story can’t even get the Facts straight. She IS NOT in a Horse drawn carriage for her parade at Dollywood. IT is a Motor carriage
OOPS, you are correct, it’s a motorized carriage. I’ve corrected the article. Hopefully that’s the only fact I haven’t gotten correct since starting this in 2006. haha 😉
People saying Dolly “caved” is rediculous! When I think of Pigeon Forge I think of Dolly. Seeing all the billboards on the interstate with Dolly letting us know we are getting close. The name of that parade is Dolly’s homecoming parade, and nothing else. I know we went just to see Dolly. We always stay 2 nights in a hotel room. For the price we pay for that, we could go to the beach for 5 nights, but we go to see Dolly. We will not go without her. And we will only be going to the things Dolly owns. No more spending the nights in Pigeon Forge or eating in any of the restaurants. We will however continue to go to Dollywood and Splash Country!
I like a lot of others think it should be someone in music to be the grand Marshall no one can take Dolly’s place but if someone is going to it should be a music person. My family love dolly and hate to see this happen.
Something is wrong
Agree with you, what does Cal have to do with a Parade in a city he probably had never been in. We are not going this year.
I assume they chose him because of the Cal Ripken experience that opened in Pigeon Forge. Spring is also a time of baseball, and his huge baseball park has a large stake in Pigeon Forge.
I agree ! His stadium in Maryland has had a big impact on many youth from across the country and the NEW facilities in Pigeon Forge will likely have a large and growing young, sports based following in the area !
Cal actually has been to the City of Pigeon Forge and brings in quite a bit of tourism with his sports complex.
Me too.
IT SHOULD BE SOME ONE INVOLVED IN SUPPORTING PIGEON FORGE, AND A NATIVE OF THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS
Something just isn’t right! Is Dollywood not going to be DOLLYwood, next!? This just seems wrong, it’s like she’s being pushed to the side. Look at all she did to help those effected by that horrible fire. She was there for them. WHY is Dixie Stampede no longer? Why is it just “Stampede”? Now the parade and the Grand Marshal not even being a native of that area or at least someone in the country music industry, perhaps of Dolly’s choosing. Seems there is a coup going on and Dolly is being cast aside! Is this of her choosing? Maybe, some of it, like giving up Grand Marshal but not to someone not native to the area or in country music. Was it Dolly who REALLY wanted Dixie taken out of Dixie Stampede? Was it because of all of this uproar over Dixie and the South? And if “Dolly” is taken out of Dollywood, something is really rotten in Denmark! Yes, I’m sure some tourism will be lost and most likely those who flock to see the parade and don’t know Dolly won’t be Grand Marshal will not be very happy and likely not return year after year for this. All of this can very well cause Pigeon Forge and Sevierville to lose a LOT of money from tourism. Ain’t this a shame?

It’s time for her to retire, take her billions and become history herself. The city she is from should also take and remove her statue along with all the other southern Statues being removed.
Evidently, you are a narrow minded person. Do you also think that they should rename the crayons, and not label one black or one white ?
You’ve posted this same reply twice Ray Ross…apparently it wasn’t stupid enough the first time so you thought we all needed to see it again. Once again, you were wrong.
Sounds like somebody needs a nap… obviously you’ve spent the bulk of your life with no connection to the outside world. Dolly should NEVER retire.. she is ageless and a blessing to us all. EVERYBODY loves Dolly.. and if you don’t, what’s wrong with ya? A true inspiration and light of this world… I was disheartened to hear Dixie Stampede’s name was changed, and I am SICKENED over this news.😔 Dolly is the heart of Tennessee. She needs to stay front and center. Is it your choice to do this Dolly? Or is the city advising it? If so I wish you’d let us know.
Ray, I agree with you. MAGA. These liberal hacks on here are PC. Remove Dolly’s statue. She did cave. These people have done no research at all about her ownership involvement. She must be spending ample time with her feminist friends from 9 to 5 (Hanoi Jane and Lilly lib Tomlin). Bye Bye Dolly. Sorry waste of silicone implants.
agree
I agree with M. Vines not this Ray
What? First you take “dixie” out of “dixie stampede” and now “Dolly Parton” out of grand marshal of the parade? Very disappointed when you carved Away our American history. I am an 8 generation Yankee and I was appalled. It IS our history. Where we came from to where we are today.
As dolly parton, dollywood, and pigeon forge fans, there is more to this story than is being told. Alarmed. Are you going to change the October Gospel Heritage festival as well?
I agree there is a lot to do in Pigeon Forge but most everybody always went to Dixie Stampede and parade to see her. If this is her choosing then she needs to make a statement on other news to the fact of why and if this was her doings or someone elses. . Also when vacations come there is so many that always went back over and over to Dixie Stampede from North and South but now changing the name shows you only want to please a few so with all the ones saying they won’t be back I hope you few can run it because my family won’t go anymore. Will choose places that please the majority not the few that is always changing things.
agree, and wondering the same about the Gospel heritage festival!
I THINK THIS IS IN ANSWER TO THE FLACK SHE GOT FOR CHANGING THE NAME AT DIXIE STAMPEDE. CHANGE IS GOOD UNLESS IT MESSES WITH TRADITION!!!
Did she change the name or someone else? Is this just the beginning of a series of changes ?
Seems to me she is gearing up to the sale of Dollywood. She’s distancing herself piece by piece.
WTH ARE YOU YELLING FOR?
My exact sentiments!
I agree! I thought this as I was reading the article. Something just doesn’t seem right!
I would just love to know what is going on. Something just isn’t right. I wish Dolly would just spill the beans and let us, her fans, know what’s going on. This just isn’t like her to shy away from her southern heritage.
Oh, no! The main reason to attend the parade was to see Dolly and feel like you are celebrating with her. This is such sad news.
Dolly put that area on the map. Whoever is writing her off is making a big mistake. You’ve got the big hotels and high prices coming in now. The small income people wont be able to afford it soon. But without dolly who wants to. If dolly is retiring, she needs to tell it herself.
That was my first thought, too, after reading the new name of the parade!! What in the world does he do musically? They could have gotten a singer or musician to take her place, Don’t get me wrong, I like Folly and she does a LOT of good things but she’s stepping down now after all the complaints with the removal of Dixie at the Dixie Stampede. I don’t think if that happened she would have stepped down, but therrs probably many haters out there now because of it, and it’s probably not even her fault.
Oops, fat fingers..Dolly, not Folly! I just hope Dolly doesn’t have a broken heart as all of these changes are taking place. 🙁 And why mess with a good thing..keep the name, keep Dolly, but add extras like marching bands! Why can’t you have both??
I too am disappointed. The connection of Pro Sports being disrespectful toward our flag and what Veterans have done for our freedom is totally alarming. Those Pro players make a lot of money. They should be proud to stand respect our flag. I guess those in charge of the Parade do not have that same view.
Well said, sir! Actually my first thought was Dolly is distancing herself from the “Southern aspect” of Pigeon Forge. First I read in the last week or two she is removing the word “Dixie” from the name of her Dixie Stampede theater. Now she’s removing herself and even her name from the parade! Forgetting your roots, Dolly??
Laura you or right
Dolly chose to remove Dixie from her shows and now to be politically correct she is dissing herself as far as possible from the pigeon forge theme to try to cripple everything there as her sad decisions are crippling her own endeavors. Pass on dollys places but still support pigeon forge.
I totally agree
SOUNDS LIKE TO ME SHE WAS EITHER PUSHED OUT OR THE CITY PISSED HER OFF MAYBE ABOUT DROPPING THE DIXIE NAME OFF HER BILLBOARD. CAL RIPKEN. WHAT A WEIRD CHOICE.
My thoughts are the same..what’s the connection?
I am very disappointed in this change. What has music got to do with it. We watch it every year and bring guests. They love to see Dolly. I will not be there this year. Between this and Dixie I think Pigeon Forge is digging them a hole. We love Dolly. And by the way this Grand Marshall is a baseball player not a musician. And all the other businesses always are in the parade!!!
I assume they chose him because of the Cal Ripken experience that opened in Pigeon Forge. Spring is also a time of baseball, and his huge baseball park has a large stake in Pigeon Forge.
I believe the same thing….I think a musician should have been picked.
without Dolly will not be attending parade, She is the highlight of the parade and going to Dollywood the next day to also see her.
They can call it what they want but Dolly is the Queen of Pigeon Forge and it won’t be the same without her. She is synonymous with Pigeon Forge and Smoky Mountains and the less visible she is, the less comfortable it will be.
#dollyispigeonforge
Which moron came up with that? UNBELIEVABLE!!!
He built a mutimillion dollar baseball complex in piegon forge that allows all familes to get in free for once to watch your child. I guess he is a business owner there but defiantly not connected to music.
I am not happy about this at all. We all love
Dolly and no one can replace her at all.
My thoughts exactly
I agree totally. I feel there is definately more to the reason of Dolly’s stepping down. Probably due to her Christian roots, and the corruption that is being brought into everything. I don’t know, but definately am disappointed. Also agree that they should have chosen someone who is in the music industry, since the name of the parade is “Music in the Mountains.” Cal Ripken Jr is great and all, but I just don’t understand the connection. It just will not be the same without Dolly 😞
This is just awful. I finally get to go see the parade and I told my husband that he was definitely taking me this year to be able to see Ms. Dolly Parton in the parade and now she isn’t going to be there.
You are absolutely correct Timothy……what a disappointment …..next her park won’t be called Dollywood……we go to Pigeon Forge just for the park, the Stampede and anything else she has her name on…..what a dumb decision on the part of Pigeon Forge biggies!!!
agree!
I agree
Well said. Dolly is such a part of the mountains. I cannot imagine a parade without her. One year we carried my two granddaughters when they were only about 4 and five years old and who are now 22 and 23 to the parade. As Dolly passed by one of my granddaughters shouted out to Dolly I love you. She turned and looked my granddaughter in the eyes and said I love you to. My granddaughter has never forgotten that parade.
Please do not make the Pigeon Forge experience so impersonal. That is why we come to the mountains, because there is such a different atmosphere. Sometimes change is not better. Please never lose the core values of God , family, and country, if you do, the Pigeon Forge experience will just be like any other place nothing special.
Really??? With out Dolly there is no parade and no need for me to visit/vacation at Pigeon Forge.
Things want be the same without her.my husband and I visit Dollywood a lot.I’m disappointed about this news.probably want be visiting as much now.this change isn’t good.
Cal Ripken, Jr???? This is a country music town. I don’t think I like the changes that are happening. I have vacationed in the pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area twice a year for my entire life. I may pick a new spot.
I agree with you 100 percent!!!!! Look at what Dolly has done and donated!!!!! Very disappointed!!
I totally agree with this. This whole situation is totally ridiculous and it is obvious why she is stepping down. I love Dolly and hate so much that this has happened. Dana J.
Bunch of us take off work that day just to see Dolly. So sad !!! Know reason to now.
Not enough music played in the area to call it music in the mountains. Dolly stampede is what 3 decades was handle to our children. Why make the change. I’m very disappointed I want be going to see it again to see the show. Why change the song???? I always go to Tennessee. Oh well not going to see that show again. 50 dollars a show ???? Not helping at all either. 😞 very saddened
I have been there for the parade because of dolly being in it . I will pass now because of the crowd
We pass as well.
That is the reason we came down to see Dolly in the Parade. I guess we will not go now.
I have to agree I was looking forward to see her so disappointed.
We won’t be going now either.
I have been to the parade and it has been wonderful! But I would like to say renaming it is great but the name and the Grand Marshal should have some connection! Cal Ripken, Jr is ok but put someone in the music industry in there, whether it is a country artist or someone associated and known in the country music community! I am sorry to see Dolly step down but she is very busy with her other business interests and not as young as she used to be!
I absolutely agree.
True and people do need to and sometimes have to slow down as they get older. Dolly is ABSOLUTELY due a rest. Slow down and smell the roses along the way but this is Dolly’s heritage. So many of her kin are there. You see the Parton name everywhere down there. Dolly’s name does not/should not be removed from so much (same as with Dixie Stampede) if Dolly has decided to slow down……IF this is Dolly WANTING to do this and not someone causing this to be done to her! But leave her name on her shows and parade and Lil’ Dolly’s and leave Dixie Stampede alone! I worry for the animal in that now. Dolly made sure those animals were extremely well seen after. Will they be now? Is any or all of this even Dolly’s anymore?
This Parade is the Dolly Parton Homecoming Parade. We have gone to this wonderful parade a couple times. The reason was to see Dolly, NO other reason just Dolly. This is a mistake for everyone. Pigeon Forge will miss out on tourist. If this is Dolly’s chose, because she wants a resign from the Parade that is one thing. BUT, if after everything this wonderful women has done for all the people and Pigeon Forge it’s self. Dolly put Pigeon Forge on the Map. If after all she has done for this area she has been ask to resign. Sham on the city of Pigeon Forge. Big Mistake, Everyone Loves Dolly,
I agree. I love Dolly. I go to parade to see her. I am so disappointed. I hate to go to Pigeon Forge now. I pray they are not doing Dolly wrong.
There is a reason she isnt coming. She has lost her fan base. She caved in to the PC.
I agree
What an ignorant statement. She has NOT lost her fan base.
Absolutely NOT!! Thank You!
I hate the idea Dolly is leaving! What connection does Cal Ripkin Jr. have? Not a fan.
I have so many memories of Dollywood an Pogeon Forge! Sad for me that that things r changing! It will always b Dixie Stampede an Dolly’s parade! I have been to both several times!
Well I am betting that she has heard some backlash from that name change
and she is choosing not to poke the hornet’s nest. Dolly has enough influence
that Dolly can do what Dolly wants to do. Just makes me sad that it appears
she did not stand on her own principles.
Agree She has not lost her fan base
You are right. She may have lost some, but for the most part, she hasn’t. She may be discouraged from ignorant statements about her that aren’t true. But people still love her!
She’s hardly lost her fan base! And, she’s very Non Political. Have you been to a concert in the last few years???
She’s lost 80% like it or not!
Very sad day for this to happen we all wonder why .. The prices in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg have been getting out of control as in things being to expensive for the past few years so I knew something has been coming ..but did not know it was basically the end of what we all love and grew up with. You will be missed Dolly. I will not be at any parade to see a ball player
I remember well the parades and the embassator days at Dollywood. All the things Dolly stands for and helped to put the area “on the map” seems to be fadeing away. Even the mountains are not the same. ALL in the name of Progress and Money How quickly we forget. SOOOO SAD.
Good answer!
She’s losing her fan base. I’ve heard of thousands leaving her. I was holding reserve, but it’s her own dumb fault what’s happening.
I have to disagree. If you follow dolly at all you would know this is not the case at all. in fact dolly’s fanbase is bigger than it has ever been.
I agree too. She doesn’t want to cause a “stir” following her unpopular decisions.
Sudden and noteworthy changes in situations like this which include a name like Dollywood can raise some questions about this renown place to visit and whether visitors will suddenly lose interest because of it all. For one I am going to think it over before I make a decision, but for me this is tantamount to saying I will not be there again…..
I AGREE! SHAME ON DOLLY FOR CAVING! MY FAMILY WILL NOT ATTEND ANOTHER SHOW OF HER’S OR NOTHING IN PIGEON FORGE THAT IS LINKED TO HER! 🙁
My goodness Barbara… talk about getting a bee in your bonnet! You’ve “shamed” her, already tried her, judged her yourself as guilty and did the hanging! All because of one person’s comments you agreed with. Wow You don’t have any FACTS as to what’s really going on. Hmm… is this the “fan base” people say she’s losing? 🤣
Dottie Meadows, read all of the comments from the people not coming because of this (me included) and tell me she has lost her fan base…
I don’t particularly like that Dolly is stepping down as Grand Marshall nor the change of the name. We have attended this parade for a number of years as it falls around our wedding anniversary of May 6th. Always looked forward to see her float as it featured a new ride or event at Dollywood.
We came to see Dolly (Rodney) Our Down Syndrome 35 years old loves to see Dolly so we will not be coming .
Have been going to the parade for some time now and have enjoyed the time . But like it or not time goes on and things change . Still will have good memories of the days, and think they still should have thought about who to put in the place of dolly a little better than what did if they don’t change the grand marshal I will not be there any more sorry but it should be a great mountain person and a music person to say the least.will be following the update.
This is the worst news of my day. Let’s forget everything that made us who we are and who got us there. I hate where culture pushes us in the name of prosperity. This sucks.
Yes
Wife and I were able to attend parade last year and privileged to see Dolly, even though different to see her in the rain. The draw for us to attend this year will not be there without Dolly.
I will not be there Dolly has none so much for y’all . Y’all are Hypocrites
No Dolly no me. Bad call.
It seems Dolly is taking a lot of heat right now, and it seems a lot of fans are turning away from her. Maybe she has reasons that are personal and just shouldn’t be outside of her personal circle. I’ve always been a fan and that won’t change. I’ve never met her, but I am a fan of the person she is. I can’t wait to visit this year!
Her fans are not turning away from her
Ummm yes they are you might not be but a massive movement has pushed most her fans away….Just because you ain’t don’t mean the majority isn’t!
We are not turning away from her at all. Nothing with her name souls be changed. She is one that started all of the show, love, and put God in her shows, singing, she Loves the Lord. I love going to Tennessee because of the friendliness and down to earth workers. Grant Marshall really….I’m out. I will go to the hills of WV.
We know Dolly well enough that if this was Her decision She would have made a public announcement. Even if her reason was private she would said just that. She knows her fans love her and would respect her choice. Her fans will always love and support Her. As fans, we should do what we would do for our dearest friends. Pray for her. And pray for the situation.
Amen! I agree, this is NOT Dolly! We need to pray that what ever is going on in the darkness, that it be brought to light! We are 4 generations that have been going to the DIXIE STAMPEDE! My daughters proposal was done at the Dixie stampede with all of our family being there and they went back a year later for their honeymoon. We have a lot of memories with our family for over 25 years there! When I saw the news and shared it with my children we were all saddened! Really there is not enough words to describe the hurt!! “Fans from Indiana”
Sad news! Unable to come for a few years but only attended because of Dolly.
First Dixie stampede and now this, “something is rotten in Denmark!!!” I think dolly Parton is being removed from things by outside investors!
Yes. We agree. There is more to the story. My guess she doesn’t agree with changes that are taking place and about to take place so she took a stand and stepped down or they put her down for disagreeing. All is not well for sure.
I agree with this, too!
Very disappointed, will be canceling my trip to watch the parade this year.
We drive 12 hours all the way from Canada and of course love Dolly, but we also LOVE Pigeon Forge and when we get there we feel we are home. Looking forward to May 3rd when we arrive.
Wow! Glad I was sitting down for this. As if the Dixie Stampede fiasco was not enough, now we have this announcement of no Dolly Parade. The reasons are rather lame. I have been coming to the parade for 24 years and yes, since i have moved to Pigeon Forge, I will still attend it but i am very disappointed to see this announcement. I’d like to think it’s only age related but riding down the Parkway once a year should not be too strenuous. I hope she changes her mind to at least participate.
I am very disappointed for the name change as well as Dolly not being on the parade. I know there has been negative thoughts since the Dixie stampede name change, and I’m sure that has made an impact on her decision. I will attend Dollywood , but not the parade. I have attended as so many others each year to see the Queen ! Without Dolly I have no interest . I support her decision , but very saddened by it!
Disappointed!! We live nearby and always attend the parade to see Dolly. My kids and Grandkids love seeing her. She is the queen of Sevier County and people love her. I am afraid many people will not attend!! I know time changes everything but not liking this change. I have talked to people that only go to see Dolly. Sad!!
I don’t think a lot of people will be there because of this, I sure won’t! Strange choice for a replacement! She just about owns Pigeon Forge, she has created so many jobs here and done so much for that place, so sad…
I agree! I do not think it was as much Dolly’s decision as it was they asked her to step down. Now they will never admit to that but from what I have been hearing that is the reason.
We agree
The left wingers have taken over pigeon forge it shoul be a music person leading the parade
. I think everyone needs to find a new vacation resort.
Dolly is a left winger!!!
Never saw dolly as leftwinger
Yes, she is!
With you.
Now I not come over from holland that was my vacation visit DollyWood because of dolly and to visit my best friends over there now that is ending
I’m sorry to hear that dolly is stepping down and won’t be in the parade,we to came to see dolly as well as enjoy the areas, but dolly was the reason we would come,we will pass on it now, sorry, but the new grand marshal should be someone known and in the music scene, dolly got the whole thing started,it should follow some of her traditions
Cal Ripken ball field there means so much to the girls who play softball. I think it is wonderful that he is going to be the grand marshal. As Dolly pointed out herself, a lot of people have made contributions to help that place grow. It isn’t all about the entertainment there. It has so much more than that to offer. The beautiful scenery, the hearts of the people, who may be strangers when you get there, but they feel like family before you leave. Change is hard at first, but it is what makes the world go round. Dolly knows this better than anyone. I am sure there will be something for everyone there.
Wait you missed the point 1. Ripken has nothing to do with country music and 2. if you have read the comments most people go to parade to see DOLLY
The parade will not survive without her! She put Pigeon Forge on the map as a mainstream vacation destination! It may carry on for a few years before it completely goes away. I have attended every year for 32 years and I will miss this cherished tradition. I hope she decided to step aside on her own and that she wasn’t pushed out for some reason. Surely “her People” wouldn’t ask her to step aside! Sad day!
I live here and always love going to the parade but won’t be going this year. It won’t be the same without Dolly. I think you will lose a lot of people. Probably the end of the parade
Have been going for many years mainly because of Dolly. You won’t see me there anymore. Was there through thick or thin rain or shine.
I THINK IT SUCKS😔!!!! I’m a lifelong fan. This year was going to be my first year at the parade. Already bought my plane ticket last summer!! Whoever booted her out, needs their butt kicked!!!!! Knowbody deserves to be in that parade more than Dolly!!! It’s her parade…. she made it….she made that whole dang town. If anybody says different, they are full of it!!!!!!
I honestly don’t believe it’ll be the same without Dolly as the Grand Marshal. As well as the music and exciting things that happen on that day, Dolly coming along on the float is the one thing that always drew the crowds. I believe now that they have somebody else on the float, the crowds will decrease in size.
Sorry to hear this. I have loved watching Dolly in this parade. I love Cal Ripken Jr. (I am originally from Baltimore and an Orioles fan), but I have always looked forward to Dolly in the parade. I guess all things change. I will still watch the parade and enjoy Cal and everyone who is there!
Do you blame her … she gave so much to the town and they quickly turned their back on her call for her head for something that was out of her control!! Plus other theatres in the area trying to use it as horrible publicity to try to get people come to their places … gross and sickening !! GOOD FOR YOU DOLLY! As the old saying goes don’t cut off the hand that feeds ya!
I was able to plan my vacation to see the parade for the first time last year, was already working on it again for 2018. I’m not going to worry about it now. I understand that Dolly is probably getting ready to slow down some, but I sure love getting a glimpse of her, I have never had the pleasure to meet my idol in person!!!!!
Will not be coming this year. Sad this is happening.
The “new” parade will now be used as a marketing tool for tourist businesses. Cal Ripken was chosen to advertise/represent the new Ball Park. The real hero of Pigeon Forge is Dolly. Maybe not having a Grand Marshall at all could be an answer to this change. What’s next? Taking down Dolly’s statue?
I have been coming to PF for 30 years and in the last three years since alcohol was brought in and the chain restaurants the whole atmosphere has changed on the strip. You now here profane language, no longer feels like a family atmosphere. Dolly stood for something but she caved and I hate that. I won’t be there for the parade. I work there 7or 8 times a year and go for pleasure 4 or 5. The pleasure trips will probably not happen. I loved the family type Christian atmosphere of the Pigeon Forge of the past.
I have been coming to pigeon forge ever since I was a child with my grandparents and my mom and somehow wind up missing the parade every year. Me and my wife just celebrated our 1 year anniversary Dec 19-23 2017 and had a blast. I hope to be able to finally make it for the parade this year but regardless whether I do or not, what dolly parton decides to do is not going to change how I feel about pigeon forge cause that will always be my home away from home. I absolutely love pigeon forge and Gatlinburg and will continue coming until the day the good Lord takes me home
Very Dissapoiniting.
I have been coming to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge ( What there was of it) since 1964. Gold Rush Junction, Porpoise Island , and a few shops, that was all that Pigeon Forge had! Dolly stepped in and look at it now!!! What was once a dying area has outgrown the dirt!!!
Thank you Dolly for what you done and I will always love you.
Political decisions and politics suck.
A big mistake changing.
This is sad news, I understand Dolly stepping down.
But to rename the parade is a disgrace to Dolly after all she has done. She made Pigeon Forge what it is today.
I agree, you can make changes within the parade, but leave the name the same!
Very sad to me .
I have been a die hard Dolly fan since the first time I saw her in concert around 1979 in Portales NM. Luck would have it that she has had shows near me a few more times where I was able to introduce this amazing musician to my wife and kids. I fully support whatever decision she wishes to make!! BTW I got to cross a visit to Pigeon Forge off my bucket list this past summer. I agree…I think Dolly has made that lovely town what it is today!!
I would like to suggest everyone that is saying they won’t attend the parade since Dolly won’t be in it to go to the Facebook page… Dolly Fans …… I think we as fans should still gather that weekend at Pigeon Forge . Show our support to Dolly by attending Dollywood, Dolly Stampede, and Dollys Smoky Mountain Adventures.
Go to the Dolly Fans facebook page and voice any suggestions how you would like for Her loyal fans to gather together to celebrate her as we have done at the Parade in years past.
I’ve always been a fan of Dolly!! She is a wonderful person, and has been in the spot light for all these years because she deserves it!! She has done so much for Sevier County . This is so sad.
Probably won’t come now, sad!!! Dolly you will be missed!!!
I love Dolly. I hope she’s not leaving the parade because anyone is saying bad things about her. We often go to Dollywood that day so we can see her there. I hope that continues. Dolly is such an extraordinary person and great business woman. She’s certainly done more than her share for Sevier County. I understand her name change and I understand her leaving the parade if that’s what she wants to do.
My 8 year old and myself are heartbroken!!! This was our think and I can’t beliebe Dolly will not be in it! 😔
Apparently I was so upset I couldn’t spell! 🤦🏼♀️
*This was our thing and I can’t belive Dolly will not be in it! 😭
Removing Dolly!!! What a disgrace!!! Everything Dolly did for that town!!! We will not be going to the parade anymore!!
I’m so sorry that Doll let politics get in the way of something that means so much to many people. I mean she wanted everyone to come to the area after the terrible wild fire. I know the area has worked hard to try to restore the area, I know it isn’t complete . Her big mistake was being on stage with the Hollywood elite bashing the president and made no response to the comments. Then she is allowing the PC kill the history of this great country. Never did I see one thing pertaining to slaves not making fun of slavery while at Dixie Stampede. You can tell me that she doesn’t own this anymore but come on if her name is on it she is getting money from it. Dolly has more clout than she wants you to believe. Thank God the mountains are the main attraction and there are more cities than Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg to visit and spend my dollars. Really folks how hard was it for Dolly to attend one parade for those whom have supported her efforts for this region? She should remember how well she did in Orlando (she didn’t) and in Branson. Pigeon Forge has depended on Dixie Stampe for the local economy. Again so sorry she put her political agenda before the people that love her.
Whats the real truth behind taking Dolly or her name out of things? Keep changing it to much you will lose alot more people. We love Dolly!
I feel that politics has once again determined the decision. First mistake ..do what you do best and don’t be political! Second mistake was removing Dixie from the theatre…now this! Sorry to see that once again something good is changing because…..why….we may never know!!
I hate that she changed the name of Dixie stampeed. That was a fun place to go for entertainment. It was harmless and didn’t mean anything to have to remove the rebel flag. Is something I never thought Dolly would do. I think it is awful because our families fought in that war. We in the south even turned against the south. It wasn’t all about black people. Brother fault against brother. It was a shame it even happen. It was our ancestors not our generation. You need to forgive everyone. And stop the fight against each other. God made each one of us as his children. Some are different colored skin. But that means nothing we are all God’s blessings.. go look at God’s creation at pigeon forge and Gatlinburg. God made the beauty of it. So think about it and forgot about the past. I think it is sad to take our statue’s down because they fault for our country. That is a disgrace. To everyone thats taking our flags down is a disgrace too. Heritage is what it is. How does it do harm today? Nothing against black people I have them in my family but it doesn’t make it right.
I think that taking Dixie out of Dixie Stampede had a decision on this she didn’t wont to get booed at. I reckon It wont be long before she distances her self from the Great Smoky Mountains completely. I reckon hanging with Hanoi Jane and Lily Tomlins and their liberal ways has changed Dolly. Goodbye Dolly reckon your headed to the land of liberals>
I think it is all stupid stuff – I love anything dolly has in Sevier County – change the name of Stampede just because it offended someone – stepping down as Grand Marshall , maybe she wanted to free up her scheldule – I will not visit Pidgeon Forge much any more – will be in Cades Cove a lot more listening to Dolly
So sorry to hear about this change. We have attended many Dollywood parades. Last year we sat in the rain just to see the parade. Without Dolly being in the parade it will lose It’s sparkle. We will pass for sure. I was also sad to hear they changed the name of Dixie Stampede. This is our favorite vacation spot. We come 2 to 3 times a year. We may need to look into new places to visit. Too many changes!
Sad to here that. Dolly is pigeon forge.
I am very saddened by all the changes being made in Pigeon Forge recently. I have never been fortunate enough to be in Pigeon Forge during May, to see the parade, but everything I have seen on it in years past, touts it as a local tradition, and keeps the small town feel to Pigeon Forge. I really don’t think Cal Ripken Jr. was a good choice for Grand Marshall, he has no ties to the area that I am aware of, and it seems more of an advertisement opportunity for him, and that’s a shame. It changes the whole feel of the parade and its meaning by not having Dolly be Grand Marshal. I do hope this was her choice, not someone elses, but I am suspicious that wasn’t the case. And that’s the real shame, if it was not her choice. Seems to be some sort of political power struggle taking place in that area, with the whole Dixie name thing, and now this. I have a special place in my heart for that area, and it really saddens me to see progress and the almighty dollar get ahold of it. The phrase, “getting too big for it’s britches” comes to mind…….
Quit making this a “political” and “losing her fans” issue. If she does not want to be the Grand Marshall anymore then accept her decision. How short memories people have…..the millions of dollars Dolly raised just a couple years ago for the fire victims….the ever growing book program Dolly started….the tourism she brought to the area…..Geesh!
This is so sad! I really don’t understand this decision. Dolly put Pigeon Forge on the map. Why has she agreed to step down? Why does Pigeon Forge want her to? I know that she won’t be able to do it forever, but even when she’s not here, her legacy should live on. So, the name of the parade should stay in tact. This is really disappointing.
I’m sad about this. I have only been there once, and I didn’t get to see the parade and Dollywood. My next trip was going to be at the time of the Parade and a chance to see Dolly in it, and now I never will. I hope to still see the parade someday, and I will still make my trip to Dollywood. Dolly, you will be missed.😞😥
My guess is that Carpetbaggers have somehow taken over the executive portions of the corporation that Dolly and Pigeon Forge had built over the years.
The Carpetbaggers don’t care about traditions at all. they are investors who want to draw in a wider range of tourists. They however, fail to realize that the tourist who have come for many years come as much for tradition as for any other reason.
Hopefully the investors will realize before they hurt the tourism to much that traditions are important, and will start embracing the tradition instead of removing them.
My family comes every other year, we will be there this summer. Hopefully we will not see to many changes that would cause us to change our tradition in 2020
Very sorry to hear! I do think they are trying to push “country music” out of everything in Pigeon Forge! Dolly put this area on the map and she is the reason many people came to the mountains. A very bad decision!! Going to lose lots of visitors. All the theaters have changed from good music to something else,
When you take Dixie out of our Country you are taking God out of our Great Country
…..All your money and One-sided beliefs will be the downfall in tourism in a Pigeon Forge.
Very surprised, disappointed and heart-broken Dolly didn’t stand up for her Heritage.
There is one thing we know for sure “God is Watching”. Amen
Well I guess I’m canceling my yearly spring trip to see Dolly in the parade. Without her why bother.
It’s so sad to see Pigeon Forge changing as it is, but now Dolly. Dollywood and Pigeon Forge is our vacation spot. Our getaway every year. My family has considered moving up there in the near future. This news has changed our minds. It lets us see that the one true place we loved to go, The one place where everyone was not falling into the “politics” of the rest of the country has also changed, has given in. It’s sad. I’m so disappointed. I hope and and pray that it just doesn’t get taken over by the crime and cruelties of the country. It always starts with small changes.
We were thinking of moving there after retirement , not now.
We won’t be back, looking for a new place.
I will not be attending the parade this year. Dolly made Pigeon Forge what it is today. She’s a beautiful person inside and out. What a sad situation. I sure hope that Dolly is doing well, and if there’s any truth to the possibility of people trying to push her aside, shame on you for your false allegiance. Dolly IS Pigeon Forge and Dollywood and DIXIE Stampede, and Sevierville. She has also done great things for Gatlinburg. Let’s not forget this kind person.
Taking the “Dixie” out of Dixie Stampede was a big mistake. Dolly bent over to the political left liberals and now this is a retaliation. Nobody is pushing her out; she chose the left wingers so her reputation must pay the price. She is showing a great lack of courage. Goodbye Dolly, and good riddance.
Do you know this for a fact?
I totally agree. Baseball has nothing to do with music. When people think of pigeon forge they automatically think Dolly Parton. This is such a bad decision. We visit pigeon forge 5 or 6 times a year but probably won’t be as often now. Bring back Dolly!
HOW STUPID!!! Now it’s the Music of the Mountain??? parade or something similar and you don’t have a musician leading it. That is so dumb.
Just canceled out reservations. Now I’ve got to find rooms at the beach. Farewell PF!
I will always love Dolly!
She is the most passionate, kind, caring entertainer that has ever been.
She has helped so many with her donations and help with the fire victims emoyment and her Imagination Library!
Thank you Dolly for all that you do.
I was at the parade a couple of years ago and had the opportunity to see Dolly. It was very cold but she was going strong. Maybe she just wants to give other artists the chance. We will always love you Dolly!
A lot of people go the distance just to see Dolly in the parade. I think it’s too much change at one time Dixie stampede and the show and now this. Going to miss her.
MAJOR DISSAPOINTMENT. Timing is everything. After all the work Dolly did this past year , now was not the time to remove her. Instead, it should have been billed as a tribute to her, and then perhaps give some advance warning that she might be retiring. But not to repace her woth someone whose only claim to fame is throwing a ball. What a worthless life.
Very well said!
Had reservations to attend this years parade. Will be getting on the phone to cancel.
Dolly has advertised, made her connection known, and helped this area of Tennessee for many years. She IS the reason Pigeon Forge and Sevierville are on the map. If it were not for Dolly, you would not have the tourism and places to work to support your families like you do now. Dolly made this possible. Dolly took care of you and future generations when she started Dollywood many years ago. She opened other venues which offered other options to visitors while vacationing. This gave you more places to work, provided more revenue for your cities, and pride in the good clean entertainment available. Those that did not want to go to the show, or Dollywood, or the parade, did not have to go. She just made it available for those who WANTED to go. It seemed like many people liked it because there was always a crowd. Now this is being changed. When I first heard about Dixie being removed from Stampede, I did not like it, but I can understand that she, or they, would like to open the stampede show in other places. But of course, the Stampede Show or “Dixie Stampede Show” is about the south. So it will not be the Dixie Stampede Show. It will be another show. You could call the new show whatever you wanted and leave the show we love in the south. Just a thought.
Now to the parade. This parade is Dolly’s Homecoming. It has to do with her giving back to your area. Just like she did after the fire. She helped many of you with this disaster. She brought attention to the disaster so that people across country could help with this disaster. Many people across the country gave from their heart, because of Dolly’s heart. They love her and love her people. She is the reason people go to this particular parade this time of the year to see her. Yes, everyone loves a parade. Most cannot tell you who the Grand Marshal is for any given parade…Except for Dolly’s Home Coming Parade. Have your own parade and leave HER parade alone.
I remember watching Dolly, and Porter, with my Grandfather when I was a child. Being from the south, but not the state of Tennessee, I still felt a connection to her. She had a big heart for your area even then. She loved the area she grew up in. She was proud of where she came from. As her career took off, she did not have to spend her money, time and energy in making her home town economy better for all of you, but she did. She did not leave her roots as her career grew, she enhanced them for future generations to come. While Dolly flew with her career, she spread her wings and covered this area to protect and help make your area prosper. Her love for this area is why visitors enjoy spending the day at Dollywood, enjoying dinner and a show at “Dolly’s Dixie Stampede”, and gathering on the roadside waiting in the weather, good or bad, for her Homecoming Parade. She made time in her life to visit, and make her presence known, so that visitors and her home town had a connection with her, not just her name. This is the “welcome, come on in, make yourself at home” kindness and warm heart of the south. I have never met or spoken to Dolly in person. I have been to her parade, enjoyed the dinner show at the Dixie Stampede, and visited Dollywood. I have admired her love for family and your area ever since I was a child. At the parade, when Dolly passed by and waved, the warmness from her heart went out to all that she connected with as she passed by. I am getting older, as is Dolly. I can understand a person will not always be there in person to continue providing what the people of this area have enjoyed all these years. IF Dolly is easing you all out of the nest of her name…Making a way for the future of the Stampede to grow and the parade to grow, I can understand. BUT IF she is being pushed out by outsiders, money hungry investors, or politics, then you should ALL be ashamed of yourselves. I hope you can make it on what few visitors that have a complaint about the south can provide you. IF they don’t like the south, they will not come. Changing the name, or the Grand Marshal will not will not bring in more people. Your complaints come from trouble makers who are not visiting the show, park, or parade anyway. Those of us who love the south and our heritage, will still visit this beautiful area, and enjoy the park with all that nature provides. The southern entertainment and music we have all come to love. I can choose the entertainment I want to see. I can also choose not to see ones I don’t. just saying.
I can understand stepping down as Grand Marshall. She’s done it for over thirty years. However, removing “Dixie” from the shows name, whether her call or someone else’s, was a bad move. Caving to PC is weakness. This is akin to taking a knee or removing the flag from the show. I don’t support that and I will think twice before I recommend the show or take my family to see it again. They will suffer a loss on this one. Disappointed.
Dolly has no idea how much she is needed, and loved by us. If this is a health thing, then ok. The dropping of Dixie is politically correct. Dropping from the parade is worrisome for us, her devoted fans. Dolly, are you ok???
I would hide also if I caved to the special interest groups and removed Dixie. Won’t return to the show. Won’t visit Dollywood either. To many other shows that won’t change for the few. Cal Ripken wow Pee Wee Herman would have been a better choice. Scratch parade off my list to.
I don’t think she decided to step down on her own. I am sure she was asked. She is Pigeon Forge. She brought all of this tourism to this town and made it what it is today and now they shove her a side. Just remember if it had not been for her and her money there would be no big tourism place to visit. Thank you Dolly for your support to this place and bringing all of the families there to visit. I love the new Pigeon Forge. We lost our park which brought us joy in Nashville. Thanks
Something is not right. We have been coming her as many as 25 or more times a year. We have always had season tickets and purchased many for Christmas presents, not counting the many people that have come because of my bragging about what it is like. Well, it is all history now and so am I. We never stand for what is right anymore but only one
Person has to squeak and ruin thngs for generations to come. Heartbroken!!!
Some of you people don’t think Dolly lost most her fans base need to wake up to reality. I for one along with many my family and friends loved Dolly Parton. Now since she caved to pc.I will never set foot in any of her attractions. Smoky mountain adventures The stampede Dollywood or pirates voyage in myrtle beach.
How selfish can we be? This woman has worked tirelessly to give us a wonderful vacation land. Now after all these years and in her advanced years, are we saying she hasn’t done enough for US, she owes us. Sorry, I thank her for all she’s done to give us a beautiful vacation land. Thank you, Dolly!
Dolly made her choice when she chose to remove “Dixie” from the Dixie Stampede. Big mistake. I have talked to so many people that are truly upset with her for doing this. Caving to a journalist article that in itself was a self centered hateful and biased view of white folks. The woman was black and it appeared she was making fun of anything southern. We are all tired of this. If you don’t like it, don’t go!
This just does not seem right to me .Cal Ripken Jr did not put Pigeon Forge Tn on the map Dolly did. It seems to me like they are trying to take her out of that area period and it’s a shame . She brings in biggest part of the tourists to the parade and to the area personally I know I am usually there when she is there. And it’s not just the area it’s Dollywood as well you hardly see anything her anymore or even hear her music being played in the park. And tourism is not the only thing Dolly does for the area she has the imagination library the Dollywood Foundation and not to mention what she did for the my people fund . So for me and all other fans around the world BRING BACK DOLLY.
As a TRUE Dolly Fan and supporter it concerns me that there is something underlying here, Dolly will never be run out of the Mountains of forgotten by the area. People will not quit visiting Dollywood or her other attractions. But has anyone stopped to think, there maybe something more to this, something more personally Dolly centered? Maybe she is looking for/needing a slow down.
I agree The grand Marshall. Should be someone in music. Why not bring back Lee Greenwood.?? Remember when he had a show in town ? He would be a good choice. We have been coming to pigeon forge for years. Our first trip was in 1989. While the town gets bigger each year , Bigger just ain’t always better. Thank you.
Canceling our plans. Will not be there without Dolly.
If Dolly was dead would they be making these same changes then?
Pigeon Forge might just become the new “Ghost Town” of Tennessee.
Very sorry to hear the news about Dolly and the name change of Dixie Stampede. Dolly has been such a big part of Pigeon Forge for so long, change is not always good, there is something to be said for tradition.
Also, whether you like it or not, the Civil War is a big part of the history of our country, the events that happened have shaped our future. We must not forget the events of the past, but we must learn from it. Removing names, taking down statues, changing traditions, does not change history. We have been coming to the Smoky Mountains several times a year since I was a child, but we are so disappointed in the changes that are happening, not only about the recent news, but also all the moonshine businesses in a place that has always prided itself in being “family friendly”, we have decided that this is not a place we want to be a part of any longer.
Dolly is being pushed out-of-the-way making her change the names of her entertainment and now she does not want to be in the parade I believe people have asked her are pushed her to not be in it. How can they be so rude to her and just respect her. It’s amazing how they can forget what she’s done for pigeon Forge. They’ll see pigeon forge Will not be the same anymore and I guarantee businesses will close because people love Dolly Parton.
I meant disrespect her
Totally disappointed she’s not doing it anymore. New name change is fine. But for Pete sake Cal Ripken Jr. as grand Marshall. Why would you use a wash up ball player. Why not choose someone in the country music industry? I for one along with family will not attend parade this time. Cal Ripken really. Next year choose someone that appeals to us the people that come. We like some that really keeps with the theme.
Handled poorly. We love Dolly and y’all will regret treating her wrong!
Cal should reconsider!
Short and sweet … things change, either adapt or go extinct.
Why couldnt Dolly still be in the parade even if not the grand marshall? I agree that attendance will probably be down because so many came just to see Dolly.
Big mistake! when I think of Pigeon Forge I think of Dolly and what she has done for so many there.
Don’t understand why this now? if it is her chose because she is getting older then I say fine but replace her with somebody that at least has musical ability. May consider canceling my plans for this year to come to Pigeon Forge.
So disappointed to hear of the changes in Pigeon Forge! We have visited for the past 28 years more than once and up to four times a year. We love Pigeon Forge as if it is home. Dolly is the foundation of Pigeon Forge. I’m hoping she has made these decisions on her own and was not forced to make the decisions that was made. She is so passionate for people and her homeland. Pigeon Forge will not be the same without Dolly involved! I believe in the long term, this will hurt Pigeon Forge and it will not longer be the “vacation hot spot”. Thank you Dolly for all your have done for Tennessee!!! West Virginia loves you!
I think it’s so wrong to push Dolly out after so many years!! Putting in Cal Ripken as Grand Marshall it’s like you trying to push in sports and that’s not what families want!!!! It’s a vacation place to make memories with your children and grandchildren!!!!!! I hate this and after so many yrs of attendance my family and I will not be there to watch the parade without DOLLY!!!!!!
Dolly has made Pigeon Forge what it is today and what to …. does Carl Ripken, Jr have to do with Mountain music baseball yes mountain music NO. I think Dolly is being pushed out
I’m bothered by a lot of the comments I’m reading, concerning Southern heritage, etc. I’m from Louisville, KY which is a southern city, and I associate Southern heritage with hospitality, manners, genteel behavior, open mindedness and loyalty. I’m pleased to see many people who have responded to this also seem to believe this, in expressing their love for Dolly. But I’m disturbed by the numbers who are assuming she “sold out” or “caved” to PC. Isn’t it possible that she simply changed her mind, and wants to be the welcoming person she has always been, and open her already big heart to include others who may be uncomfortable with the word “Dixie”? And the bottom line is, unless someone KNOWS the truth, it seems to me it’s unfair to accuse her of “turning her back on her heritage,” when being welcoming and showing good manners is EXACTLY the tradition that Southerners cherish. I understand if seeing Dolly is the main reason people went to the area that they no longer want to go. My husband and I went to the area in 1985 for our honeymoon, drawn to the natural beauty of the mountains and the warm friendly atmosphere that was prevalent then and, I believe, still is present. I know it’s “only” the internet, but remember that unkind words anywhere can never be retrieved, and know the facts well before judging anyone.
What does Cal Ripkin, Jr have to do with Mountain music or any music??? Terrible decision. And caving to liberalism to remove Dixie…..so disappointed. I’m sure there are enough people who just don’t care anymore to assure great numbers, but I do care what is happening to our culture. I won’t come. Too many other places to go. Guess I better book Branson.
Really sad. It’s one thing to change the name, but what an unusual choice for Grand Marshall for a parade that touts country music and the Great Smokey Mountain history. I grew up in the south and it will not matter that they remove the word Dixie from everything-you can’t change history, it will always be Dixie until our generation is gone and then those that supplied the pressure to have every statue, flag or word removed that related to the Civil War (however unjust it might have been) will have to live in a country with no historical background-a land of the lost.
Rock on Dolly-you are loved!
I’m really disappointed about the news.my husband and I visit Dollywood a lot.we want now.come back Dolly.we love u.
Just for the record – Dollywood and Splash Country and many of the other “Dolly” attraction are owned by Herschel Entertainment. She is the major stockholder. Dolly does not personally CONTROL any of it. Yes I am disappointed that “they” changed the name of Dixie Stampede = the North vs the South – the Rebel and American flags – but it is still good entertainment ! !
Ok – no – Dolly wont personally be in the parade – but there will be a lot of people who worked hard to plan a performance for our entertainment – give them a break. I love a parade – and I have been to both large and small ones.
And are any of you nay sayers thinking about her age – 70 – or maybe her health? ? How many of you would still be doing everything that she still does – for our entertainment. She is not the only one who contributed to the growth of Pigeon Forge.
There are a lot of show places – country gospel and other entertainment – that has helped Pigeon Forge become a tourist trap! ! ! And – yes – that is what it is. People come from all over the world to see the mountains, the fall foliage, the devastation after the fire last year, the parks, the amusement parks, the water parks (both outside and inside the resorts) – they don’t just come to see Dolly – because she is rarely here.
Think about it – it is NOT Dolly that makes Pigeon Forge a great vacation place – it is everything else. Read the travel brochures.
So Dolly wants to retire – go home to her husband and ranch – spend her millions while she is still well enough to do so.
My father retired at 62 and died 3 years later. He didn’t have much time to enjoy his retirement. Is that what you want for our wonderful Dolly ? ? I don’t think so.
Yes – I live here – so I see what goes on every day. The improvements – the new hotels and restaurants – it is always growing. And it has nothing to do with “Dolly”.
Rant over – good night.
I’m disappointed in this news. Dolly is why we have vacationed in the Pigeon Forge area from Arizona several times. This feels like she is being pushed aside due to all the PC politics.
Cal heading up a music fest parade? Nice guy, but odd decision. We have plenty of spring training here so no more visits to PF for the time being.
Then again, not much makes sense these days. Dolly was on stage Trump bashing during one of those awards shows and that didn’t sit well in our family. It’s all so sad as we have always admired her.
I just want to cry. My granny died but she was the one who raised me. She loved Dolly so much and so do I. I’m moving to sevierville because I just love it there and I will be scattering my grannys ashes there. How sad this will be when Dolly world is no longer Dolly world. We all love her and will remember her no matter what. She will live on in our hearts forever. Love you Dolly!
Canceled our plans. We will NOT be there. It should have been announced that this would be Dolly’s last year for the parade so people could be there for her last appearance in the parade. GET DOLLY BACK!!!!!’
No one can change history, no matter how hard they try. I think it is absolutely ridiculous to change the name of the Dixie Stampede. Yes, it is about money and being PC, but why sell out your heritage? If the journalist involved in this debacle did not like the Dixie stampede the way it was, then she did not have to visit. This PC nonsense has gone way too far in our country. We need common sense to come back. The parade changing at the same time seems very strange, especially having a sports figure as the Grand Marshall in a parade called Music of the Mountains. I do not patronize places and events, or spend my money with corporate types I fundamentally disagree with.
Wow, this will be my 5 th time to come to the parade to see Dolly. I put in for my day off, booked the hotel for my daughter, son-in-law and grandson, and got everything planned out, and then I find out Cal Ripken will be in the parade, not Dolly. Nothing against Mr. Ripken, but seriously what does he have to do with country music, Dolly, or the opening of Dollywood! I’m still coming and I’ll go to Dollywood to see Dolly, but I’m very disappointed that she won’t be in the parade. If Dolly decided not to be in the parade, then I respect her decision. However, if someone else decided this, then they should have gotten someone with a country music background to ride in the parade.
Maybe the parade is to much for Dolly. She’s in her 70’s and getting on those floats can’t be easy for her. People should blame her or Pigeon Forge. She’s not the only game in town
